Seriously this recipe I am about to share is for – THE BEST SUGAR COOKIE in the world! I mean, truly. They remind me of those circle shaped processed sugar ones that are at the grocery store, where they are iced with sprinkles and depending on the holiday, you can get them with different colored frosting and always sprinkles! NEON Blue frosting for 4th of July, NEON Orange frosting for Halloween…you know the ones I am talking about, the ones that taste like an addiction.
One of my best girlfriends introduced this recipe to me when we were living in Atlanta (Love you Jess!) and it became a tradition to bake them together each year during the holidays. Now we live states away but the tradition lives on.
You will need:
— 1 cup butter:
— 2 cups sugar
— 2 eggs
— 3 tsp. vanilla
— 1 cup sour cream
— 1 tsp. salt
— 2 tsp. baking soda
— 5 1/2 cups flour
Cream together butter and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla. Then add sour cream. Combine salt, soda, and flour and add to mixture (about a cup at a time to keep the powder ingredients from flying all over your kitchen)
Roll out on floured surface to about 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick. (this part is important-If you want them thick and fluffy like the grocery store ones)
Bake at 375 for 7-8 minutes.
They should be puffy and white, and will not look done.
PULL them out before they get brown on the sides!!!
This recipe should yield 4 dozen large cookies or 60 cookies of varying size, depending on the cutters you use.
Okay, for THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE PROCESS…the frosting. I have tried these cookies with store bought cookie frosting and they were fine. BUT once I tried them with Buttercream frosting, I can never go back. THE BEST SUGAR COOKIE in the world is a process but the results are so worth it…trust me.
Here is the simple buttercream frosting I use:
1/2 cup butter, softened
4 cups powdered sugar
2 tsp vanilla extract
1/4-1/3 cup milk
In a mixing bowl, cream butter. Beat in sugar and vanilla until crumbly. Gradually add milk until frosting reaches desired consistency. Add desired food coloring.
We have about 1 billion cookie cutters. Truly. This is what people buy me for gifts year after year because they know I like to bake. This year, we choose to make barn yard animals with scarves! No matter what cutters you use, the process and results are super fun and festive.
Have fun and embrace the mess with this recipe. Make this a project for the weekend with your kids or girlfriends. It really is fun, but also, its messy and time consuming but so so delicious!
